The telecommunications industry in the Arabic world is fast going the real estate way. The most modern and luxurious gadgets, and services are in the offing. And, more telecom licenses are up for grabs.
The talk of the telecom industry was the third mobile phone license in Saudi Arabia.

The Mobile Telecommunications Co. of Kuwait, Oger Telecom of the UAE, Orascom Telecom from Egypt and MTN from South Africa are among the bidders for the same.

Meanwhile in Jordan, Umniah Mobile Communications won the fixed broadband wireless access license awarded by the country’s Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.

The UAE witnessed the DU Telecom going live, ending a 34-year monopoly over the sector by incumbent operator Etisalat. But, on the other hand Etisalat - Emirates Telecommunications after winning Egypt's third mobile licence in 2006 plans to borrow USD1.75b for its Egyptian operations. And, the company is pondering whether to bid for a majority stake in Kuwait's National Mobile Telecommunications.

Some companies came out with their financial results and the picture seemed as good as it has been for the other industries. Mobile Telecommunications Co. (Kuwait) announced a 67.9% rise in net profits, Qatar Telecom’s net profits touched QR 1.7bn and Wataniya Telecom of Kuwait disclosed a 39% rise.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary the Bahrain Telecommunications Company signed a MOU for the development of Satellite Services in the Middle East and North African regions with SpeedCast and launched a GPRS roaming service with T.Mobile in Austria. The company also denied rumors that it plans to reduce its manpower by sacking 400 employees.

UAE based Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications strengthened its presence in the key African market of Sudan by forming a partnership with the new telecom operator Canar.
Summarily, the telecom industry progressed at a steady frequency with not much upheavals.
