After distilling business news on company specific level for Arabia 12 countries for January 2007, here is our summary:

The Banking and the Real Estate industries as usual dominated the corporate scenario in the GCC and other countries of the Arabic world.

2. ‘The Gulf Commercial Bank’ was officially formalized with an expected capital of QR7.2bn and its promoters being individuals, companies as well as institutions from Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE and Kuwait.

3. Saudi Electricity Company posted its biggest quarterly loss in the last three years, its effects reaching up to the stock exchange. Arabia 1000 covers all.

4. On the brighter side, the corporate Arabia can pat themselves for achieving few firsts. UAE’s Tamweel PGSC’s CEO has been named a Young Global Leader for 2007 by the World Economic Forum. Acer Computer Middle East became one of the world's top three PC vendors in 2007. Emirates Airlines won the Global Traveller's GT Tested Awards while BMW Group Middle East announced record sales in the GCC countries with 11,250 units, the highest ever volume achieved in the Gulf region.

5. After gracefully hosting many a distinguished guests and dignitaries, Sheraton Oman Hotel closed its doors after a 22-year journey for a USD25m renovation programme that will result in its complete transformation. Another company that is reforming itself, after almost 25 years is Baskin Robbins. It has aggressive plans to expand its exclusive Baskin Robbins franchise across the Gulf.
